Beth Bradley has a problem. Everyone is expecting her successful music executive boyfriend, Charlie, to be her date for her best friend’s wedding. There’s one hitch: Charlie doesn’t exist. Unless she can think of something fast, she’s headed for the most humiliating weekend of her life.
Alex Tanner has a problem. The former Navy SEAL's search for a double agent lands him at the Kensington Hotel, and he needs a cover to finish the job. When the sexy maid of honor blackmails him into pretending to be her lover, he thinks he's been handed the solution.
Except Beth has a way of stumbling into trouble, and when the man Alex is hunting starts targeting Beth, Alex has to decide between duty and the woman who has stolen his heart.
This book popped up as a deal tweet and I think it was $.99 (it is free at the time of this review) and this plot…you guys, this plot is right up my alley! A heroine is at a friend’s wedding, she has everyone convinced she has a boyfriend (she doesn’t), her ex is there, and she meets a stranger who she blackmails into being her wedding plus one. But aha! He’s no random stranger, he’s a fed! And he needs to get into that wedding, so her attempt to blackmail him is actually a happy accident for him.
I almost DNF’d and I’m glad I didn’t, however I got really tired of the heroine allowing everyone to treat her like crap. At the end, she grows more confident yet other than telling the ex to f off, her mom kind of gets a pass for her behavior. I really wanted something better.
Beth is at her best friend’s wedding, she doesn’t have a date, her ex will be there, but she has told everyone for years about her fake boyfriend “Charlie.” No one really believes he’s real, but he might be, so they go with it. Her bestie knows the truth. But Beth’s goal is to tell everyone that sorry, but Charlie couldn’t make it. However, her mom loves her ex, Spencer, who is a massive douche, and this is sort of where I had issues. Her mom is pretty awful to her, and she just…takes it. Same with Spencer.
So while Beth is out in front of the hotel, she sees a guy breaking into a car, and she gets mouthy with him. I noticed she couldn’t stand up to anyone at all, except for Alex. She already thinks he’s a car thief, and possibly dangerous, yet she wants him to be her fake boyfriend “Charlie.” Okay. Look, I’m a huge sucker for boyfriend is undercover and a fake date trope. Together? I will fully suspend belief for that! And I’m glad I did.
Alex/Charlie does a great job with Beth and all of her hangups. He is very dangerous, but not to her. He used to be a SEAL and now he’s undercover trying to get into a wedding where some really bad people might do some really bad things. This happens to be the wedding where Beth is maid of honor! So to keep his cover, and for Beth to have her fake boyfriend, they wind up joined at the hip. And I loved every second of it. Every. Second.
The Wedding Trap is fun, it’s enjoyable, and I really liked how by the end, Beth has a lot more self confidence. As of now this book is free, and I would recommend it ,free or not.
