I wasn’t going to do anything today. I mean, I’m still in my pj-s and it’s like 2pm, so you get the idea. Well part of my not doing anything involved sitting by the fireplace with coffee and my phone…and twitter. yup, Twitter. And you know what? Everyone is reading Gena Showalter’s new novella! Well guess what? I’d pre-ordered that bad boy, so I ran up to grab my nook.

The One You Want is a prequel novella for Ms. Showalter’s new series The Original Heartbreakers, and if the whole series is like this, she has a big hit on her hands. I loved the cast of characters, I loved the plot, and I loved the writing. You can’t beat a Gena Showalter heroine for witty comebacks.

Kenna Starr has a reputation in the small Oklahoma town she grew up in. She’s worked really REALLY hard to clean it up, no matter how undeserved, and to put it behind her. But it is always there, whispering in the background.

Dane hasn’t seen Kenna since they were kids, and he’d said something awful to her. He left that town and never looked back. He’s come to his father’s engagement party because wants to apologize, and then put the whole small town behind him once more.

But the 7 year old redheaded child is now a 23 year old woman and he can’t stop or control his reaction. He wants her. But she’s off limits. Apologize and move on, right? Right.

And Kenna…accepts his apology. She even teases him a bit. This confuses him to no end. But he catches himself teasing her back. Dane never teases. Or flirt. Yet he’s doing both. I love how he was knocked off his feet instantly with her, and I love how she made him want to be a better man, because at the beginning, he’s kind of an asshole.

Their romance was well-done, and they were good together. There are a couple things holding them back, though. And this is a big one…the engagement party for Dane’s father? He’s marrying his long-time lover…Kenna’s mom. That’s right. So the gossip is crazy. Not to mention that Kenna had a baby when she was 17. This romance has some obstacles, that’s for sure.

And yet, it’s fabulous! Kenna isn’t ashamed of her past, and she shouldn’t be! She’s a fantastic heroine and she’s so much like my friends that it was easy to visualize her and to enjoy her story. Dane was a guy who you wanted to see him become hero material instead of just a womanizing playboy. Together, they’re a great couple.
