For Jack Shepherd, tiger shape-shifter and former soldier, life is heading for a dead end. Dead End, Florida, to be exact. When he learns that he inherited a combination pawn shop/private investigation agency from his favorite uncle, Jack’s first job is to solve his uncle’s murder. Because sometimes it takes a tiger’s eye to see the truth.

When Alyssa Day ended her Warriors of Poseidon series, many of us wondered, But what about Jack? (for those who are new to this author, Jack is a tiger shifter who worked with the Atlanteans to overthrow the vampire threat in the last series).

The rumor mill batted a few ideas around, but the predominant one was that Jack would be getting his own series! I’d heard it would be a PI series, where Jack, the hard-bitten detective, back from fighting in the resistance, would solve murders and other Urban Fantasy Paranormal type stuff.

The rumors were sort of right. What we have straddles the Urban Fantasy/Cozy Mystery line pretty well. And, it’s not actually told from Jack’s point of view.

Enter Tess. Tess Callahan can see the way someone will die if she touches them, so she’s sort of avoided most human contact, and made the Dead End pawnshop home. Which is where this book begins.

After hearing about his uncle Jeremiah’s death, Jack heads home to Dead End, FL. His uncle left him half a pawnshop. With every intention of signing his half over to Tess, Jack has no desire to stay. Until he meets back up with Tess.

But Jack hadn’t been told that Jeremiah had been murdered, then dumped on the doorstep of the pawnshop. So this was news to him. Before he can get his feet under him in Dead End, FL, another body is dumped at the pawn shop. He and Tess can’t let this go. With the idiot sheriff doing nothing to help, and strange occurrences happening left and right, the two of them have no choice but to take care of this themselves. But searching for a murderer can be dangerous.

With threats coming at them from both the bad guys, and the sheriff, they don’t know who to trust. Meanwhile there are hints of some dark magic happening during the next blood moon, which is in just a few days. The ending leaves you satisfied, but also leaves room for the next book without having a cliffhanger.

Oh! And remember how I’d mentioned the rumor that Jack would be a PI? Well, it just so happens that Jeremiah also left another business to Jack. It’s a detective agency. He’d made it specifically in case Jack ever wanted to come home, maybe just maybe, this could entice him to stay. But how can you keep one of the former leaders of the Rebel Army in a small-town? Will it be enough to keep him there?

Alejandro from Alejandro’s Sorceress (the crossover between Warriors of Poseidon and the Cardinal Witches) has a small role. I’d have liked to have seen him more, and have Jack and Tess utilize him more. He’s a great character, and further links the 3 series that Ms. Day has interwoven.

Alyssa Day is taking on a lighter tone, and this book fits much more with her Cardinal Witches series, than it does with the Warriors of Poseidon. I can’t really pin down the genre, but I will say it’s like cozy mystery meets Urban Fantasy lite. Full of her trademark wit, Dead Eye has everything from romance to mystery, and you won’t want to miss it!
