A new town, new friends, new challenges…. And a new heart-stopping adventure from #1 New York Times bestselling author, Ilona Andrews. Kate, Curran, and Conlan may have left Atlanta for Wilmington, but the usual magic mayhem has also hitched a ride!

Kate and Curran have just settled into their new home and their 'low prolife,' when a local businessman approaches them with an offer they can’t refuse. A mysterious evil has spawned in the nearby forest and is holding a defenseless town hostage. The ‘due date’ is rapidly approaching.

It’s exactly the kind of fight the Lennarts can’t resist, not for the prize the town offers, but for the people who will surely die if they ignore it. If they succeed, they’ll be rescuing an entire community and can build a strong new base for their family and the Wilmington Pack. If they fail...well, fail is a four-letter word.

Nothing comes without a price. Now Kate must decide if she has what it takes to pay it.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know that I’m a huge Ilona Andrews fan. The husband/wife writing team is one of my all time favorites, and their works are probably my most re-read books. That being said, I don’t think I’m being too biased when I give this book 5 stars.

This Kate Daniels book is the second in the Wilminton Years. Short version, Kate and Curran left Atlanta, Georgia and moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. It was complicated in Atlanta with Pack politics, and Kate’s claiming Atlanta and all. Wilminton is their quiet place to raise their son, now 8, and to try to keep a low profile. In the first book Magic Tides, the low profile is possible, but they realize it isn’t going to last for long. In this book, they realize low profile isn’t going to be realistic.

A man comes to Kate and Curran asking for help. In true Kate and Curran fashion, they can’t say no. The forest around the small town of Pendleton is demanding human sacrifices. Kate and Curran head out and they find something bigger than they expected. It’ll take some big plans and big magic to stop it. But as much as I would love to tell you everything, what I loved most about this book was the team of Kate and Curran. They truly were partners in every sense. They had their separate moments, of course, but after being married for ten years at this point, they are the best team.

This series has Kate and Curran working together instead of against each other, and that makes them a very formidable team. The story flows effortlessly as the characters do what they do best, and the hints here and there of Julie, the Atlanta Pack, Ascanio, Raphael and Andrea…I think the authors balanced the old with the new perfectly.

This book had me instantly re-reading Magic Tides and then going right back into Magic Claims. I then went to the Ilona Andrews website and re-read the snippet “Purpose” and every other tidbit I could get my eyes on. This world they’ve built is complex, magical, and wild. The whole of the world in the 2050s (ish?) is a wild place. The world is small again, and the authors have sucked us into this world. This book grips you and even though you’re swiping pages quickly, trying to find out how they handle it, what happens next, you’re savoring every word on the page. I highly recommend this series, and if you just want to read this book, you won’t be lost, but you’ll be missing out on the richness of this universe that Ilona Andrews built.
