Heroes. Warriors. Alpha males.

These are all terms we use to describe our male lead, but really, I want to know what draws you to a great hero? No matter the genre, a strong character can make the book.

I took to twitter to see what reactions I got to this question: What do you like to see in a hero? What traits? What really stands out to you?

Author Sidney Bristol says : “Confidence in something, willing to admit he’s wrong, possessiveness, can laugh, & lets be honest, able to kick ass”

Book Blogger Laurielu of Bona Fide Reflections says: “loyalty, persistence, strong-willed but melts for his lady love, tortured, edgy, tall, sense of humor, smart, leadership”

Book Blogger Ren says: “tortured alpha hero who love his woman so deeply. I’m sucker for this type of hero :)”

Julie says: “Strength, loyalty, compassion, intelligence (witty) and a great sense of humor – oh yeah, don’t forget the sword and kilt..”

Annie from Under the Covers book blog says: “Sense of humor and honor. But big muscles are nice too.”

Blogger Kendra Edens says “Tortured, but finds peace only within his greatest love – the heroine. Protector, intelligence, ALPHA all the way! :)”

So since we’re talking Heroes, let’s make it fun! What do you think makes a hero? What traits do you like to read about in your novels?

I’ll start us off: I write about Highlanders because I love how they were fighting to preserve a way of life, and these large, wild warriors were the underdog in the fights. Who doesn’t love a good underdog story, right? It doesn’t hurt that he wears a kilt and carries a broadsword.
