The Demon’s Song by Kendra Leigh Castle

I really enjoy Kendra Leigh Castle’s Dark Dynasty series, so when I saw this I was really excited to be asked to review it. There were a couple things that bugged me though-I felt like I was missing something, and I felt like something about it was really familiar.

and novella Vivi and the Vampire” (found in the anthology [book:Vacation with a Vampire: Stay\Vivi and the Vampire\Island Vacation|13545614]). “It isn’t necessary to have read either, but these prior Harlequin releases each tell a story of characters you’ll meet in the Hearts of the Fallen series – specifically, Raum and Justin. They should be considered connected works, but the Hearts of the Fallen begins with The Demon’s Song.”

So that being said, I did enjoy The Demon’s Song, I just think that while the story stands on its own, Renegade Angel is a great book and sets the world up well.
This one starts out with a couple of girls sneaking into an upscale club to rescue their roommate. They’re not sure what’s going on, but they know it can’t be good. Sofia bumps into Phenex, the entertainment for the club, and can’t understand her attraction to him, or his to her, for that matter.
Phenex is the Angel of Song, but he’s fallen, and now he’s no longer in hell, but he’s not exactly happy either. When he sees the girl he bumped into race away in fear, he knows something’s going on. He leaves the stage and bolts after her. They both find a vampire draining her roommate dry. Phenex kills the vamp, but he and his friend Justin (owner of the club and the vampire king), now believe that not only is this not an isolated incident, but Sofia’s life is now in danger.
Phenex appoints himself her bodyguard and these two have some super sexy moments, but there was at this point, a whole lot of nothing happening. I mean the romance between the two was great, but the suspense plot took the back burner. I wouldn’t have minded but it was too, convenient.
At one point she even went back to work. Really? Knowing you’re up against fallen angels, demons and vampires, you think work is where you should be? Really? No.
I liked this one, I enjoy this author, and the ending was good, but I really think it shouldn’t be a stand-alone. Reading Renegade Angelsets it up and the world-building was so much better in that book. I think having different publishers for each book is partially why the different vibe. But I don’t think this works well as a stand-alone. I also hope that the next one will be a bit tighter.
